Christmas is coming and I started digging through my stash and laying out some inspiration pieces for a gift that I needed to make. Handmade is always a more meaningful gift.
I wanted it to have a vintage look as I thought it fit "she who shall not be named in case she reads this blog". I love old vintage rhinestone pieces so that was my first pick, then I added the steel round because of the tiny bit of rust and the vintage appeal. The diving swallow helped me to make it asymmetrical and added some whimsy.
The first step was to glue the bit of vintage sparkle to the steel round. I used E6000 which is my go to glue for all things metal. Use hole punch pliers to make a hole in the head of the bird. In this type of spot hole punch pliers are easier than trying to drill in the exact spot.
The bird is a plain brown wren, so I got out my gilder's paste and created a nice patina with German Silver and Patina colors then I rubbed it off the outside edges so the brass below was a bit shiny.
To make the attachments you will need some wire. I used 20 gauge sterling to match the steel. It has been oxidized with liver of sulfur. Make a loop in the center of about 5 inches of wire.
Put the loop through one end of the chain--I'm using sterling as I really like this person....
After you make the first wrap you can thread on a rondelle which you may have in your stash or you can find in our sparkle mix. A crystal would work too. Repeat this attachment from the bird to the center of the pendant and again on the other side.
I always wear any piece that I'm giving away to make sure that it lays right. This piece ended up being a bit scratchy so I'll buff the back until it's comfortable. It's always a good idea to do this if you sell your jewelry also, you will have happier customers.
I HOPE SHE REALLY LIKES IT!
